One of the challenges new residents face is the sense of being out of place because the environment they are currently in is new and unfamiliar to them. Many, in effect suffer from loneliness, which a lot of times results in bad first impressions. What's more, you miss out on the fun of meeting new people and making new friends.

So be able to effectively get out of your shell, you can research a bit about the place first, that way you are more or less familiar with the common destinations like the cleaners and the schools (if you have kids) or the local grocery or general store. You can also look up local interest groups and submit letters of intent in advance indicating that you will be moving to their locale pretty soon and would like to join their group. This way, you already establish a relationship with someone new and will have someone to seek out when you get to your new home.

Also, simple friendly gestures can always put you and people at ease - a smile can get you a long way. You can also introduce people whenever it's appropriate, or if you are feeling up to it, mentally and financially, you can host a small gathering for neighbors so you can get everyone together and introduce yourself and your family to all of them. Also, nothing speaks “friendly” like a small, wholesome and fun party with delicious food and a dash of alcohol for everyone.
