RG1 covers Katesgrove and Newton in the Reading area of Berkshire, southern England.
Newton’s northern boundary is on the River Kennet which forms part of the Kennet and avon Canal. Where the Kennet and the Thames merge is known as Kennetmouth and is a popular area for people to meet. In the summertime it is the perfect area for picnics and family gatherings. Nearby are the historic Horseshoe Bridge which, takes its name from its past as a pathway for barge horses but in more modern times has been converted to a footbridge. The other bridge in the area is an early railway designed and built by legendary member of the industrial revolution Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
The area is defined largely by terraced houses which were originally built to house a workforce of a large biscuit factory. It is a largely Christian area but there are also several other Islamic centers. Sitting in the commuter belt this is the perfect area for young families, keen to find a place with a slightly more gentle way of life than the city of London itself.
Nearby Katesgrove elects three councillors to the Reading Borough Council which is the local authority for both towns. However, it is most famous for being the home of a member of the armed forces who proudly won the Victoria Cross in 1915 at the battle of Gallipoli in the First World War. He saved the life of a colleague over the course of a 48 hour period, stopping the bleeding from what would otherwise have been a terminal wound and then later dragged him 600 yards back to the safety of British lines, all the while dodging enemy bullets. While he died tragically early at the age of 50, the man he saved, Arhur Andrews lived to the ripe old age of 89.
