SM5 covers the Carshalton area of the London Borough of Sutton. In the main town of Carshalton itself there have been discoveries suggesting that this area of London has been settled since Neolithic times, and even before the Norman Conquest there were a total of five manors, each owned by an individual noble or freeman. It appears in the Domesday Book as Aultone under the ownership of Goisfrid de Mandeville.

Nearby St Helier is an estate built by the council between 1928 and 1936 to rehouse people from parts of inner city London that were falling apart.
