If the London Docklands is where you are moving to then you should know that it is part of the boroughs of Newham, Southwark, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. The Docklands were formerly a section of the port of London that at one point was the largest port in the world but has since been redeveloped for commercial and residential use.
In Roman and medieval periods the ports around what is now London were small and vulnerable to bad weather and thieves. In 1696 the Howland Great Dock was constructed in Rotherhithe to replace them as a large and secure port. Unsurprisingly it was a huge success and would continue to grow over time, with many other docks being added between 1802 to 1921. Between 1960 and 1980 most of London's docks were closed and Docklands was no exception. However, plans were quickly underway to reopen and redevelop the area. Many business buildings and expensive homes were constructed and later the Docklands Light Railway made transport to and from the area much easier and more roads to the area were constructed as well. The proximity to London City Airport also helped matters.
Today Docklands is a popular place for businesses and for people to live. Many old warehouses have been converted to flats and has become a prevalent place for commuters to live. The area is still growing with more development in the works and now features its own free newspaper and symphony orchestra.
So if you feel where you live is important then get on the phone with Man and Van and we'll take you to your new Docklands home.
