SM6 is a town in the London Borough of Sutton about 10 miles outside the centre of the capital city. Prior to the extension of the city limits it was a part of the county of Surrey. The name Wallington comes from the Anglo Saxon ‘Waleton’ and it appears in the Domesday Book under the ownership of the Norman King William the Conqueror. Since 2007 it has undergone something of a sudden expansion with a collection of major retailers coming to the town at the same time, bringing with them jobs and the need for new housing. David Weir, the Weirwolf of Paralympic fame was brought up in the area and still lives here to this day.
Beddington has similar history as the former home of the Carew family who owned Beddington Park. Sir Walter Raleigh got married here in secret to avoid the wrath of the Queen. Nearby Hackbridge is undergoing work to become the UK’s first truly sustainable suburb, packed with eco-friendly homes as part of a 150 million pound redevelopment. In contrast, Roundshaw is the product of a redevelopment, built as it was on the site of the former Croydon Airport and making the most of a piece of land that had fallen into a state of disrepair.
