The area was recorded in the Domesday Book and was known as Great Ilford to distinguish it from nearby Little Ilford. The earliest of its known history stems from the discovery of a mammoth skull found in 1860 that is now on display in the Natural History Museum. Ilford was an important spot in the 18th century because the road from London to Colchester passed through it and because of it's proximity to the River Roding. It was a rural town until urban development began in in the late 19th century, with a railway and new businesses and homes being created. The well known Ilford Photo firm was opened around this time and long running electronics company Plessey opened in 1917. The population of the area grew rapidly as the town evolved with it growing from 1,724 to 11,600 is just over one-hundred years.
   
Ilford is a very diverse region, with people from all the world making there home here, with residents originating from South Asia, Ireland and Poland. There are many faiths followed because of this with practitioners of Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Jewish religions. The town is well connected with the rest of London with many buses and trains running regularly. Ilford is the home of two non-league football teams; Ilford F. and Waltham Forest F. Inventor John Logie Baird lived in Ilford when developing the television. The area is not far from Stratford were the 2012 Summer Olympics were held.
