Barkingside sits in the district of Ilford but despite this it isn’t part of the county of Essex. IG6 is part of the London Borough of Redbridge and is home to some beautiful old architecture. The Train station is Edwardian and the Holy Trinity Church was built in 1840. In religious terms though there is a very large Jewish community in the town hich extends into nearby Ilford and Chigwell.

Evidence of this Jewish community is that a huge number of the buildings on the High Street are owned by entrepreneur and TV personality Lord Alan Sugar. Nearby Hainault was recorded in 1239 as ‘Hyneholt’. The area was mostly owned by Barking Abbey and was largely forested under the care of the Royals. As a result the first main trade in the area was producing timber for ships in the capital, but as this trade died down the new demand was food and much of the woodland was flattened and in 1851 an act was passed in parliament to allow the deforestation of about 3000 acres of woodland.  A few years later in 1856 the Great Eastern Railway built a loop line to Ilford and Hainult was included on that line, allowing the expansion to begin and Hainault to become something of a commuter town.
