TW16 is predominantly made up of the town of Sunbury-on-Thames in the Surrey borough of Spelthorne. It is located roughly sixteen miles southwest of London and is bordered by Feltham, Hampton and the River Thames. The town is split into two parts by the M3: Lower Sunbury, which is known locally as Sunbury Village, and Sunbury Common which makes up the northern sector of the town. It is a fairly residential town but plays host to the Queen Mary Resevoir which was constructed in 1925. It is one of London’s largest reservoirs and the Queen Mary Sailing Club can be found on the waters.
Sunbury Village has had part of its area designated as a conservation area due to its historic buildings, the plentiful number of pubs and restaurants and a stunning section of the Thames River. One can take boat trips on this stretch of the Thames and take in the leafy town from the waters, as a change of scenery. Sports are a big part of life in Sunbury as it is the home of London Irish Rugby Club, Sunbury Cricket Club and Kempton Park Racecourse.
Historically, Sunbury-on-Thames has been a place of occupation for nearly three thousand years. Bronze Age urns dating from the 10th Century BC were found in the vicinity of the town and it is also mentioned in the Sunbury Charter of 962AD. The St Mary’s Anglican Church perched beautifully on the bank of the river found a mention in Charles Dickens’s book Oliver Twist and has been the site of worship for over two thousand years, in various different guises. Sunbury was also mentioned in Orson Wells’s seminal War of the Worlds.
